Bio
As an artist currently based in Davis, CA, I focus on my familial upbringing in the central valley as a girl, my evolving identity through experience as a woman, and the connection we have as humans to Earth. Working across mediums, including painting, textiles, and ceramics, I explore ideas of vulnerability in domesticity through personal and shared narratives. I find myself using textile mediums to investigate the domestic world by ways of comfort, cultural expression, and social structures. My work criticizes and rejects capitalistic culture and explains the influence this has had on warped feminist narratives. Through this idea, I am questioning patriarchal systems in paintings and ceramic work, while considering how textiles can be a form of resist in a woman’s practice. My work grasps at how influencing the community to care for Earth results in caring for each other, and creates an objective matriarchy.
In working with materials derived from Mother Earth, I interact strongly with what she provides us. By thinking about nature and the past, these mediums I use are central to my work because of their history and influence. Clay, oil, fiber, derived from the natural world. Direct inspiration for my work comes from family photos, fairytales, and lived experiences, which offer insight into the liminal spaces between girl and womanhood. In reimagining the domestic lifestyle, I ask how the home may be viewed through a matriarchal lens, one in which a woman’s labor and influence hold truth.
